How seats work in Supernova
Each team member in your workspace is assigned one seat. Seats define:
- Which parts of Supernova a member can access (Design systems, Portal, or both)
- What actions and permissions they have
Supernova offers both paid and unpaid seats. Additional permissions can be granted by assigning an admin or owner role.

Paid seats
Builder
The Builder seat is designed for product teams who use design systems but don’t create them. It’s ideal for product managers, designers, and engineers who build features in Supernova Portal using AI.
Full seat
The Full seat provides access to both Design systems and Portal. It’s intended for design system teams who create, maintain, and document design systems.
All Full seats also include Builder capabilities, such as:
- Creating projects and features
- Browsing design systems
- Using Ask AI in Portal
When assigning a Full seat, choose one of the following permission levels.
Editor
- Can create and edit design system content
- Can approve and publish documentation
- Access to all Portal features
Editors cannot access workspace or team settings unless they are made admins.
Contributor
- Can create and edit design system content
- Access to all Portal features
Contributors cannot approve or publish documentation, and cannot access workspace or team settings.
Unpaid seats
Viewer
The Viewer seat is for team members who consume design system content without editing it. Viewers can:
- View published documentation and basic design system data
- Browse the design system in Portal
- Use Ask AI and chatting in projects without prompting AI
Billing
The Billing seat is intended for finance or operations roles. Billing members can:
- Manage billing and workspace members
- View published documentation and basic design system data
- Use Browse and Ask AI in Portal
Billing members cannot chat in projects or build with AI.
Invite workspace members
Any new members you've invited will receive an email and will show up as 'Pending' in the list until they've accepted the invitation.
Resend invitation
You can see if a user hasn't accepted their invitation yet by the 'Pending' label beside their name. If a user is pending but did not receive the email, or you would like to remind them, click Send invitation again in the context menu to email them again.
Change member seat
- In the relevant row in the Members table, hover and click their seat to open a dropdown menu.
- Assign the desired seat.
- The member’s seat will be updated.
Remove workspace member
- Click ••• in the relevant row in the Members table to open the context menu.
- In the context menu, click Remove from workspace.
- A dialog will open. Click Remove member to confirm.
The workspace member will be removed and lose access to the workspace and all design systems. If they were in a paid seat, this seat will become empty and can be filled by another user at any time.
Transfer ownership
To transfer ownership of a workspace, you can assign someone else owner permissions first, and then revoke owner permissions for yourself.
Alternatively if you are the only owner in the workspace, you can select another user to transfer ownership to:
- Click ••• on your row in the Members table to open the context menu.
- Select Transfer ownership.
- In the dialog, select which member you would like to transfer ownership to and confirm.
- Your role will be changed to the new owner’s current role.
FAQ
You can only change your own seat if you have owner or admin permissions.
If you are an owner but also the only member of a workspace, your own owner permissions cannot be revoked.
