Creating a new invite only design system.
Overview
Invite only design systems give you a more powerful way to manage access to your design system content and data. By restricting design system access to certain team members, you can have better control over who sees what, and when.
With invite only design systems, you can:
- Manage workspace members on a design system level.
- Keep content private until you’re ready to share it with other team members.
- Maintain oversight of who can edit or contribute by separating users into specific design system teams.

A design system can have one of the following access settings:

Choosing who should access a design system.
Create a new invite only design system
Adding team members to a new design system.
To create an invite only design system:
- In the design system menu, click + New design system.
- Enter a name for the design system, and choose the design system access Invite only.
- Add existing workspace members to your new design system.
- Click Create design system to finish.

To change a design system to invite only:
- In design system settings, under Design system access, change to Invite only.
- Because this design system will now be closed and all workspace members will be removed, this action requires a secondary confirmation.
- Optionally, you can add existing workspace members to the design system now.
- In the dialog, click Confirm.

To change a design system to open to everyone:
- In design system settings, under Design system access, change to Everyone at [workspace].
- Because this design system will now be opened and all workspace members will be added, this action requires a confirmation.
- In the dialog, click Confirm.
Manage design system members
Viewing all design system members.
You can manage your team from the design system members page. From here, you can invite new design system members by email, or add existing workspace members.
Add design system members
To add members to a design system:
When adding members to a design system, they must first be invited to the workspace.
- In settings, from the design system members page, click Add member to add an existing member and select them from the list, or choose Invite to invite a new user to the workspace.
- The added members will join the design system automatically, and will also be notified by email.
Remove design system members
Team members can be removed from an invite only design system — they cannot be removed from design systems that are open to everyone at the workspace.
To remove members from a design system:
- In settings, from the design system members page, click
- In the relevant row in the Design system members table, hover and click the Delete icon.
- In the dialog, click Remove member to confirm.
FAQ
Invite only design systems are hidden from anyone that is not a member.
This excludes owners, who can view a list of all design systems, including ones they are not a member of.
No, team members cannot request access directly. They also cannot see a list of all design systems.
Only owner and admin roles can send invitations to users, provided they are also members of the design system.
Yes. Since all workspace members can access all design systems by default, changing the access setting affects all existing team members.
- When changing design system access to Invite only, all workspace members will lose access (except for the admin making the change)
- When changing design system access to Everyone at [workspace], all workspace members will gain access.
When inviting new design system member, they will also be invited to your workspace and all other (open) design systems in the workspace.
To invite a user to a single design system only, all of your design systems must be invite only.
