Importing from Figma

Import design system data from a Figma library.

Here are some of the issues you could run into when importing data. Luckily, they're all quick and easy to solve.

Error: Nothing was imported

Error: nothing imported

You'll see this error message if no styles or components exist in the file. To fix this:

  • Check you're importing from the correct file.
  • Check the file contains the styles and components you want to import.

Error: The file hasn't been published

Error: unpublished file

Your Figma file needs to be published as a library before Supernova can import anything from it.

To fix this:

Error: No styles or collections could be found

Error: no styles found

This error occurs when Supernova can't find any styles in your Figma file.

To fix this:

  • Republish the file if styles have been added recently.
  • Double check the styles you want to import are in the file.

Error: Some styles were not imported because they're not used in the file

Error: styles not used

This error means that certain styles aren't used in the file. You can see which styles exactly in the error message.

To fix this:

  • Apply the styles to any element in the file. Republish the file, and import again.

Error: Supernova couldn't access the file

Error: no access

This means that Supernova has somehow lost the connection with the file.

To fix this:

  • Check the file still exists.
  • Authorize Figma again.

Error: Figma rate limits

Error: Figma rate limits

Figma enforces rate limits on all tools that use their REST API. These limits affect everyone and vary based on your Figma plan, seat type, and file location.

Here are ways to resolve or work around these limits:

Make sure to use Figma Full/Dev seat (Recommended)

Files connected to Supernova should be authorized with Figma Full/Dev seat to use the highest rate limits.

We recommend that you don’t link any Figma View/Collab seat to your Supernova workspace.

If you have View or Collab seat, upgrade to Full seat:

  1. Ask your Figma workspace admin to upgrade your seat
  2. Admin goes to: Figma → Settings → Members → [Your name] → Change seat
  3. After upgrade, reconnect Figma in Supernova
Current limits
  • View/Collab seats: 6 imports per month maximum
  • Full/Dev seats on Pro: 10 imports per minute
  • Full/Dev seats on Enterprise: 20 imports per minute

To check your current seat: Open Figma → Click your avatar → View profile

Files in Starter plan workspaces have 6 imports per month limit, regardless of your seat type - we recommend that you import files from paid Figma workspace, to replace monthly limits with temporary ones.

How to move files between workspaces
  1. In Figma: Right-click the file
  2. Select "Move to project"
  3. Choose a project in your Professional/Organization/Enterprise workspace
  4. Retry import in Supernova
Check file's workspace plan

Open the file in Figma → Click file name → Look for plan badge (Starter / Professional / Organization / Enterprise)

Connect multiple Figma accounts to increase import capacity. When one hits rate limits, Supernova automatically switches to another. Each account needs Figma Full/Dev seat and access to your files.

Rate limits are per Figma account, shared with Supernova, Figma MCP (Cursor, Claude Code, etc.) and other API tools.

Add instruction how to do that tbd

If your current connected account has restrictions, connect a different account with better access.

Requirements for the account
  • Full or Dev seat (not View/Collab)
  • Professional, Organization, or Enterprise plan
  • Edit access to the files you want to import
How to switch accounts
  1. In Supernova: Data sources → Figma → Disconnect
  2. Click "Connect new file"
  3. Sign in with the Figma account that has proper access
  4. Authorize Supernova to access your files

Important: If you're using a personal access token (PAT) instead of OAuth, all users share the same rate limit. Switch to OAuth connection for per-user rate limits.

Rate limits by Figma seat and workspace:

Temporary limits (reset every minute)
  • Full/Dev + Professional: 10 requests/min
  • Full/Dev + Organization: 15 requests/min
  • Full/Dev + Enterprise: 20 requests/min
Monthly limits (reset first day of month)
  • View/Collab + any workspace: 6 requests/month
  • Any seat + Starter workspace: 6 requests/month
Recommendation

If retrying after couple of minutes doesn’t work, that means that most likely you’ve hit the monthly limit on Figma View/Collab seat or Figma Starter plan → we recommend trying different solutions, like upgrading your Figma seat or workspace.
