You can ask Supernova AI about any entity in your design system and receive instant answers about components, tokens, and assets across all connected data sources, as well as guidelines from the documentation.
You can:
- Ask context-specific questions about your components, tokens, or usage guidelines.
- Search or browse your design system visually.
- Learn instantly how specific design elements should be used, themed, or combined based on your documentation.
Ask mode is ideal for quick answers, onboarding, and everyday discovery of the design system, ensuring everyone uses the exact source of truth.
Set up Ask AI
First, make sure Portal is enabled:
- From Supernova Home, under Destinations → Portal, click Set up.
- Select which design system and datasets you would like to use. At least one dataset must be included.
- In the dialog that appears, toggle Enable AI features in Portal ON. Ask AI should be also enabled by default.
- Click Enable portal to complete setup.
Ask AI will now be shown with the Enabled badge, and the results will be tailored to the selected design system and datasets. If the enabled badge is not shown, it can be enabled in Portal settings.
Custom instructions
This setting can be used to tailor how Ask AI responds to user questions, such as communication style, formatting, or team preferences.
Personalized responses
By default, Ask AI personalizes its responses based on each user’s work area, providing information that is most relevant to them. For example, users in Engineering will see code-focused explanations and examples.
Each user can select their work area in Profile settings.
Select an area of work to receive personalized responses.
How to use it
Type your question into the field and select Ask Supernova AI or hit Enter.

Ask AI searches your Figma components, design tokens, Storybook stories, assets, design system components, and documentation to give you precise, context-specific answers.
Who can ask questions?
Any member of the workspace can use Ask AI to ask questions about your design system, regardless of seat type. Credits are shared by all members of the workspace.
What can it answer?
Ask AI can answer questions about the following data from your design system and documentation:
- Components: Usage, variants, properties, code examples
- Tokens: Values, usage patterns, relationships
- Code: Implementation details, props, Storybook stories
- Guidelines: Best practices, usage rules
Privacy
- Your design system data stays in your workspace.
- Ask AI does not train on your content or share it externally.
- Currently, Ask AI chats are private to the user. Admins can download anonymized threads to gain a better understanding of what users are asking.
Data governance
In Portal settings, you can download a CSV file with anonymized team questions, responses, and ratings.
This information can be used to identify gaps in your documentation and add custom AI instructions, providing your teammates with more accurate, context-aware answers.
To export all Ask AI conversations:
- Go to Settings / Portal / Ask AI.
- Scroll down to the Data governance section and click Download CSV.
