This version was released on March 4, 2026.
We're introducing support for Figma's extended collections, making multi-brand design systems much easier to manage. Extended Collections let you create a parent collection and extend it for each brand with value overrides. Update your parent once, and all extended collections automatically inherit the changes unless they have explicit overrides.
Alongside this support, we've updated the Figma Variables Sync plugin to help you work with hierarchical collections more effectively.
Design system platform updates
Collection hierarchy view
Browse your collections as a hierarchical tree in the Design tokens section. Parent collections show their extended children directly underneath, making your multi-brand structure visible at a glance.
Override indicators
Overridden values are clearly marked in the tokens view, just like in Figma, so you can immediately see what's customized per collection versus what's inherited from the parent.
On top of that, when you are browsing the root collection, you can see how many overrides this particular token has in a collection family, per theme. Makes it easy to spot if the amount of overrides matches or if there are any inconsistencies between themes.
Theme hierarchy in the token detail drawer
The token detail drawer now has two tabs for better management of custom properties and themes.
Theme hierarchy in exporters and docs
Theme selectors now show extended collection relationships. If the theme is collection-specific, it will have a suffix, meaning:
- you can apply Dark to get the root collection values
- or Dark • Sub-brand 1, to get the Dark theme from the Sub-brand 1 extended collection level
Plugin updates and refreshed plugin interface
The Figma Variables Sync plugin has a fresh look. The main navigation and useful links now live in the sidebar, making the interface cleaner. The plugin window is also resizable, so you can adjust it to fit your workflow. New Styles and Components tabs contain instructions for importing these into Supernova using file links.
See the hierarchy before you sync
The plugin now shows parent-child relationships directly in the collection list. Extended collections display which parent they inherit from, with clear indicators showing how many values are overridden.
Dependencies handled automatically
Select any extended collection and the plugin automatically selects its required parent collection - even if it’s coming from a remote file. This behaviour aims to prevent broken references and keeps your collections in sync.
Additionally, we are surfacing information about remote root collection and remote references.
Backwards compatible
All existing tokens, themes, documentation, and code exports continue working unchanged. Extended collections are purely additive. Import them when you're ready, or keep using your current setup. Nothing breaks.
